Stump Grinding & Removal in Buffalo, NY

Grinding stumps and surface roots below grade so you can reseed, replant or build — with the chips cleaned up and the hole backfilled.

A stump left in a lawn is more than an eyesore. It is a mowing obstacle, a tripping hazard, a nursery for carpenter ants and honey fungus, and — with many species — the source of a ring of suckers that keeps coming back every spring. Grinding solves all of it at once by turning the stump and its major surface roots into mulch.

We grind to a depth suited to what you plan to do next: a few inches below grade is enough for turf, while replanting in the same spot or pouring a slab needs considerably more. Our machines range from narrow walk-behind units that fit through a standard garden gate to larger self-propelled grinders for big trunks, so access is rarely the limiting factor.

Our Stump Grinding Service

Grinding Below Grade

Standard depth is 6–10 inches below the surrounding soil line — enough to plant grass over and to mow across without ever finding it again.

Surface Root Grinding

The roots radiating out from the stump get ground down too, so you are not left with ridges running across the lawn.

Narrow-Access Machines

Compact grinders fit through gates and between houses, which matters on the narrow lots common across Buffalo's older neighbourhoods.

Utility Locating First

Before any grinder starts we arrange utility marking. Gas, water, electric and irrigation lines run closer to old stumps than people expect.

Chip Removal or Backfill

Grindings can stay as mulch, backfill the void, or be hauled away and the hole topped with clean soil ready for seed.

Deep Grinding for Replanting

Planting a new tree in the same location, or building over the spot, calls for a deeper, wider grind — tell us the plan and we will size the job to it.

When To Call Us

If any of these describe your property, it is worth having an arborist take a look — most tree problems get cheaper to solve the earlier they are caught.

You want to reseed or lay sod

Grass will not establish over a stump. Grinding and backfilling gives you a level surface that seeds evenly with the rest of the lawn.

Suckers keep sprouting around it

Poplar, willow, elm and some maples will send up shoots from a live stump for years. Removing the stump ends the cycle.

Carpenter ants or fungus have moved in

A decaying stump near a house is an attractive nesting site, and honey fungus in one can spread to healthy trees nearby.

It is in the way of the mower

Stumps and raised roots wreck mower blades and make a section of lawn tedious to maintain forever.

You are building, paving or fencing

Anything poured or set over a rotting stump will settle unevenly as the wood breaks down beneath it.

Someone could trip on it

A low stump hidden in grass is genuinely hazardous, particularly where children play or where you have guests after dark.

Our Process

  1. Measure & Quote

We measure the stump at its widest point, check access and note anything nearby that needs protecting, then price the work.

  2. Utility Marking

Underground services are located and marked before the machine arrives. This step is not optional and it is included.

  3. Grind Stump & Roots

The cutting wheel works through the stump and its surface roots in passes, with screens set up to keep debris off siding, glass and vehicles.

  4. Backfill & Clean Up

The void is filled to your preference, excess grindings are removed or spread, and the surrounding area is raked and blown clean.

Stump Grinding Questions

Grinding chews the stump into mulch to below ground level and leaves the deeper root system to decay naturally. Full removal excavates the root ball entirely, which needs heavy equipment and leaves a large crater — worth it only when you are excavating the area anyway. For almost every residential situation, grinding is the right answer.

Six to ten inches below grade as standard, which is plenty for lawn. If you intend to plant a new tree in the same hole or build over it, we go deeper and wider — just tell us at the estimate so we bring the right machine.

Yes, with a deeper grind and the grindings removed rather than backfilled. Wood chips left in the hole tie up nitrogen as they decompose, which starves a young tree, so the void should be filled with clean topsoil instead.

Most residential stumps take between twenty minutes and an hour and a half once the machine is in position. Very large trunks, hardwoods and stumps in awkward corners take longer.

We lay protection over hard surfaces on the route in and screen nearby surfaces from flying chips. Grinders are heavy, so there can be some marking on soft ground; we route around irrigation heads and soft spots wherever possible and point out anything noticeable before we leave.
